Chloroquine (Plaquenil)

Recommended For:

a) Prevention of malaria when going to a region that has chloroquine sensitive malaria organisms

b) Treatment of malaria when afflicted by choroquine sensitive malaria organisms

Dose:

a) For prevention: – 200 mg(155 mg base), 2 tablets by mouth on the same day, once a week; starting 2 weeks before the trip, during the trip and for 4 weeks after returning from the trip.

b) For treatment - 200 mg (155 mg base), 4 tablets by mouth initially followed by 2 tablets at 6, 24 and 48 hours.

Avoid if breast feeding.

Contraindications:

Allergy to aminoquinoline or hydroxychloroquine compounds or derivatives

Special Precautions:

Use with caution in individuals deficient in G6PD enzyme or have liver disease, porphyria or psoriasis

Side Effects:

Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea
Blurred vision, abnormal color perception, decreased eyesight
Ringing in the ears, decreased hearing
Depressed bone marrow production of red & white blood cells
Darkening skin, loss of hair
