Primaquine Phosphate

Recommended For:

a) OFF LABEL use to prevent malaria in long term visitors (peace corp workers, missionaries etc.) to Chloroquine resistant malaria areas.
b) Treatment of patients with malaria caused by plasmodium vivax and ovale species to prevent relapse

Dose:

15mg base (26.3 primaquine phosphate), two tablets by mouth once a day for 2 weeks.

Unknown, avoid if possible

Contraindications:

Allergy to primaquine or other aminoquinoline compounds
Low blood counts due to medications or illness

Special Precautions:

Individuals with G6PD deficiency, NADH reductase deficiency; use may result in destruction of blood cells

Drug interactions:

Increases blood levels of theophylline.
